A Short Insight From an Ancient Spiritual Conversation

“Even as in this world no great changes take place before the coming into being of their cause, viz., the cosmic elements; changes like anger, despondency and joy do not manifest in the behaviour of the noble ones without proper cause.”

Lines from The Supreme Yoga (Yoga Vasishtha) by Swami Venkatesananda.

Sri Rama, when he was sixteen, grew despondent and began losing his health. Seeing this his father, King Dasharatha got worried. Everytime the king questioned his son about what was wrong with him, Rama would give a “nothing” for a reply and remain silent.

King Dashratha finally turned to wise sage Vasishtha for counsel. These lines were what the great sage replied to the king.

These lines are the prelude to a most unique conversation about life that happened between a sixteen year old Sri Rama and the great sage Vasishtha.

This is being narrated by the the author of Ramayana, sage Valmiki, to sage Arishtanemi (yes, context within context)

Nothing comes into being without the coming into being of its cause.

I wonder if this is a clue for us to look deeper into our thoughts — into those random ideas and moods, good, bad or ugly, that strike us at odd hours and at odd places.

All of it has a genesis. All of it has a source in our consciousness.

If we begin to observe and understand the root of our thoughts and behaviour, imagine the insights and tools we will have to lead life!

What is stopping us?
